ERDMÖBEL – an experiential experiment

A weird and probably East-German term for coffins is “Erdmöbel”, meaning “furniture for the soil”. When asked by the amazing Societaetstheater Dresden how we would like to be permanently present as a piece of furniture in the lobby of the theater, we thought of this last piece of furniture, which is still mostly an object made out of massive wood. As we happen to research the cultures of funerals, we thought of it as an interesting intervention. The audience is invited to get inside the coffin, close the lid and then listen to an audio loop with questions on how one might want to plan the last performance in some one’s biography.
